Commonwealth Games 2026 – could Liverpool make it work?

Liverpool’s Mayor Joe Anderson has gone public on Liverpool’s plans to host the Commonwealth Games in 2026.

The 20002 games certainly provided Manchester with a boost, but is Liverpool as far ahead on it’s development and regeneration pathway as Manchester was back then?

No-one (and certainly not this blog) can doubt Joe Anderson’s commitment to Liverpool and his vision for the future – he certainly “gets” the global cities thing. Does Liverpool, though, have the necessary depth, breadth and expertise in its political will to use an event like the Commonwealth Games as a real catalyst for a step change in the economic productivity of the City?

The blog wishes the bid well – what s good for Lverpool is good for Manchester, the North of England and the whole of the  country. No-one ever accused Joe of a lack of ambition – he and Sir Howard Bernstein were questioned at MIPIM this year on the possibility of a North West bid to host the World Expo…….and nether of them rejected the idea outright!
