It is no coincidence that on the day of the 3rd Reading of the Bill for Phase 1 of HS2 the North – in the form of Civic Leaders from Leeds – is giving the embattled Chancellor no room for doubt as to how we feel about HS2.
Connectivity is one of the fundamental principles underpinning the Northern Powerhouse which, as yet, exists in concept and theory only.
Bridging the time and convenience gaps between the major cities of the North and the economically more productive London/South East is important – but not exclusively so.
Shortening journey times and ease of travel across the “M62 Corridor” and thus diminishing reliance on that creaking 1960’s cart track is, arguably, of critical importance in truly empowering the North.
But that, of course, is HS3….
